Bobcats take series with Hurricanes behind 11-6 win in finale

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University put together a 16-hit attack as the Bobcats defeated Georgia Southwestern State University 11-6 Sunday (March 17) afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats, which took two-of-three games in the series, improved to 15-11 overall and to 6-3 in the PBC, while the Hurricanes fell to 19-7 and 5-4. GCSU returns to action Friday (March 22) with a 6 p.m. PBC home contest against Flagler College.

Georgia Southwestern opened up an early 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the third, but the Bobcats trimmed the lead to 3-2 on Gabe Wuerth's two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the third. It was Wuerth's second long ball of the year.

The Hurricanes pushed across two more runs in the fourth on a Kalvin Alexander to left-center field to open up a 5-2 lead, but the Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the inning on an Evan Cowan double to right-center field.

GCSU broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth as the Bobcats sent 11 to the plate and scored six times to take a 9-5 lead. Braeden Smith and Evan Cowan had back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 5 and chase Georgia Southwestern starter Andrew Geiger (3-1). Mitch Cowan gave the Bobcats the lead for good on a two-run single to center. Cam McNearney, who was a home run shy of a single, cleared the bases with a triple to the right-center field gap.

Brandon Bellflower and Smith drove in the final two GCSU runs in the seventh on sacrifice flies.

The Bobcats tallied 16 hits with Wuerth, Evan Cowan and McNearney each posting three. Smith and Mitch Cowan had two hits apiece. McNearney drove in three, while Wuerth, Smith and Evan Cowan had two each.

GCSU starter Jacob Ryan (4-1) earned the win, while Lex Kenny earned his third save of the season with three scoreless innings.
