Bobcats march by Saints 7-1 in series opener

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University starter John Luke Glanton shut down Flagler College for eight innings as the Bobcats defeated the Saints 7-1 in the opener of the Peach Belt Conference baseball series Saturday (March 23) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats improved to 16-11 overall and to 7-3 in the Peach Belt, while the Saints slipped to 11-15 and 5-5. The teams will play a noon doubleheader Sunday (March 24) to wrap up the three-game set.

Glanton, who threw 103 pitches, only surrendered three hits - all singles - in eight-plus innings as he improved to 4-3. He only allowed three runners to get into scoring position as he allowed one earned run and struck out two. Glanton recorded 15 outs via the ground ball.

Braeden Smith gave GCSU a 1-0 lead as he scored on wild pitch from Flagler starter Daniel Fischer (2-4) in the second inning.

The Bobcats doubled their lead an inning later as Gabriel Wuerth scored an unearned run on Smith's fielder's choice.

GCSU broke the game open in the fifth as the Bobcats scored three runs on Evan Cowan's double to center field to give Georgia College a 5-0 lead.

A Brandon Bellflower RBI single to right in the sixth and a Mitch Cowan sacrifice fly in the seventh push the Bobcat advantage to 7-0.

GCSU collected nine hits as Bellflower, Matthew Mebane, Smith and Evan Cowan each collected two hits.
