Caban’s dominance & dynamic offense delivers doubleheader sweep

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Georgia College & State University Softball picked up the road doubleheader sweep over Coker University. The first game went to the Bobcats 6-1 with game two being an offensive battle at 17-12.

GCSU improved to 18-14 overall and Coker fell to 7-18. Georgia College returns back to Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday, March 23 for a doubleheader at Lander University starting at 2 p.m.

The Bobcats plated six runs on nine hits in the first game of the double header. The Cobras did plate the first run in the third inning, but GCSU countered back in the fourth inning with two runs to take a lead they would never give up. Jessica Owens started off the inning with a walk and was pinch run for by Riley Barsby who was driven in on a double to left field by Divina Checo. Samantha Wilson drove in Checo, the go ahead run, on a single to right field to make it 2-1.
Georgia College tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single down the left field line from Owens. The Bobcats pushed three more runs around in the seventh inning. Emily Hobbs made it 4-1 on a one base knock to center field. Kam Caldwell followed with a single of her own to put GCSU in front 5-1. Karlie Gutierrez drove in the sixth and final run of game one on a single up the middle.

Hobbs and Owens both had two hits and a run batted in during game one. Hobbs had a double and went 2-for-4 while Owens added two singles going 2-for-3.
Tiffany Caban got the start and the complete game win to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Caban tossed a gem of a ballgame, only allowing one run on four hits after facing 32 batters. She also nabbed her career high of eight strikeouts in a single game.

Game two was an offensive show for both squads as a total of 29 scored on 37 hits. The Bobcats accounted for 22 of those hits and 17 runs. GCSU scored in six of the seven innings including an eight run first. Gutierrez kicked off the scoring with a single up the middle. Stephanie Condland made it a 3-0 game on a double down the left field line. Mackenzie Martin snagged her first two RBI of the day with a single through the right side. Hobbs capped off the first hit parade with a three-run home run over the left field fence. Coker countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 8-1. Martin picked up her third RBI of the game in the second inning on a single through the right side.

The Bobcats grabbed an 11-point lead in the third with three more runs scoring. Owens blasted a moon shot over the left field wall to score herself and Caldwell for the Bobcats to sit at an 11-1 lead. Martin drove in yet another run for GCSU on a single bringing it to a 12-1 game. Coker pushed six runs around in the bottom of the third inning to make it 12-7. Georgia College extended the lead with two more runs scoring in the fourth inning. Reina Checo drove her first multi-base hit of the season on a double to left centerfield to push run 13 across. Owens drove her in on a single making it 14-7. The Cobras kept themselves in the game plating three more runs in the fourth inning.

GCSU countered with a run 15 in the fifth on an Owens single up the middle. The Bobcats finished their offensive show in the sixth inning taking the 17-10 lead. D. Checo kicked it off with a double then scored on a wild pitch. Hobbs nabbed an RBI double to round out the scoring.

Owens led the offense in game two going a superb 4-for-5. She drove in four RBI and came around to score twice on a homer and three singles. Martin had an outstanding day at the plate as well going 3-for-4 and driving in four runs on three singles. Condland was perfect in game two with a 3-for-3 outing driving two runs in on a double and a single. Gutierrez was also perfect in the second game going 2-for-2 as she also came around to score three times. R. Checo had her best game of the season going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. D. Checo and Hobbs both went 2-for-6 with a two base knock. Hobbs also had four RBI and a round trip shot.

Shelby Jones got the start and the win in the circle to improve to 7-4 on the season. She had six runs score in two innings. Golden Thrower came in as first relief throwing two innings with two of five runs scoring being earned. Kelsey parlor closed the game throwing three innings allowing a single earned run to earn the save.
