Bobcats fall in 12 inning battle at Lander, 7-6

GREENWOOD, S.C.- Georgia College & State University Softball took a tough 7-6 loss in 12 innings on the road at Lander University.

GCSU fell to 18-15 on the season and 2-8 in the Peach Belt Conference. LU improved to 21-7 overall and 7-3 in the PBC. The two squads will conclude the three-game series on Sunday, March 24 with a doubleheader starting at noon.

The contest was a pitchers' duel through three innings until the Bobcats pulled in front in the top of the fourth inning. Mackenzie Martin put Georgia College in front 1-0 on a double to the left center field fence. GCSU pushed two more runs around in the fifth inning to take the 3-0 lead. Jessica Owens drove a single through the left side for the first run of the inning. She then came around to score on a Stephanie Condland single up the middle. The Bearcats countered in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run to bring the score to 3-1. The Bobcats countered in the top of the sixth with a run which was plated on a Karlia Gutierrez single through the right side. Lander matched the run with a run scored on an RBI ground out, 4-3 was the score. LU pushed the game into extra inning with two home runs in the home half of the seventh inning. GCSU took the lead back in the ninth inning with a two-run missile over the left field fence from Condland making it 6-4. Lander brought the game to six all on a home run of their own. The Bearcats walked the game off on a double to left field for the 7-6 win.

Condland had a superb day at the plate going 4-for-6 with a round trip shot to drive in three runs and score one. Emily Hobbs, Gutierrez, and Martin all had two hits to round out the multi-hit Bobcats. Hobbs and Martin both had a double to their name.

Jana Shellhorse got the start in the circle for Georgia College. Shellhorse pitched six innings and faced two batters in the seventh, only allowing four runs in six innings of work. She also picked up five strikeouts. Tiffany Caban closed the ball game and got the loss throwing the final five and a third innings only allowing three runs on three hits while fanning three batters.
