Bobcats skid in doubleheader loss at Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C.- Georgia College & State University Softball took two losses in the final two games of the series at Lander University. Game one fell to the Bearcats 12-7 with game two having a final score of 4-1.

GCSU fell to 18-17 overall and 2-10 in the Peach Belt Conference. LU improved to 23-7 on the season and 9-3 in the PBC. The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 27 on the road at Albany State University with a doubleheader starting at 5:00 p.m.

Georgia College scored first in the first game of the doubleheader to take 1-0 lead in the first inning. Emily Hobbs reached base on a double to left center field and was scored on the Karlie Gutierrez single to left center field. Lander had a six-run bottom of the third to take their first lead of the game, 6-1. Lander plated three more in the fourth inning making it a 9-1 game. Gutierrez knocked her first grand slam of the season to make it a 9-5 ball game. Lander plated their final runs of the game in the sixth inning to make it 12-5. GCSU tried to battle back to extend the game scoring two runs in the top of the seventh on a Stephanie Condland two run blast over the left center field fence. Lander won 12-7.

Gutierrez led the Bobcat offense on a 3-for-4 game at the plate as she nabbed five RBI and scored two runs on a home run, a double and a single. Hobbs had a 3-for-4 game one as well with a double and a pair of singles while coming around to score twice. Condland rounded out the multi-hit batters on a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI and a home run.

Shelby Jones got the start and the loss in circle for the Bobcats going 2.2 innings with five earned scoring. Golden Thrower closed the game with three runs scoring on five hits in two innings.

Lander scored first in game two of the doubleheader with a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. LU plated another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead in the second. The Bobcats cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth inning on an Eliza Khune RBI ground out. Lander responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the sixth to take the 4-1 win.

Emily Hutcheson led the offense with a perfect 2-for-2 day with a pair of singles.
Jana Shellhorse got the start in the circle for the Bobcats. She had three runs come around on four hits. Shellhorse fanned two batters picking up strikeout number 500 on the season. Tiffany Caban was the first reliever throwing a single inning, only allowing one run. Jones closed the game with a shutout inning.
