AUGUSTA, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Baseball put on a hitting clinic in the 10-0 win over Augusta University to open Peach Belt Conference play.
GCSU improved to 9-8 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. Augusta fell to 8-9 overall and 0-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.
The Bobcat offense put the pedal to the metal scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
Gabriel Wuerth and
Brandon Bellflower started the contest off with a pair of singles.
Matthew Mebane forced a Jaguar error to load the bases for Braedan Smith. He drove the ball back up the middle to plate the first run of the ballgame.
Evan Cowan nabbed the fourth single of the inning two plate two more runs to make it 3-0. The bats go quiet in the second inning but put up a two spot in the third. Mebane reached on a base knock through the right side to start things off. Smith launched a homer to put the Bobcats up 5-0 on Augusta. The odd innings were good for GCSU as the sixth run came around to score in the fifth inning on an RBI single from
Mitch Cowan. Georgia College scored in consecutive innings with another one run inning kickstarted by a Wuerth double. Bellflower drove him in on a single to center field to make it 7-0 Bobcats. No runs scored in the seventh inning but another three spot for GCSU came in the top of the eighth inning.
Cam McNearney reached on a double to left field and Wuerth reached on a single to start the inning. Mebane rifled one over for a three-run shot to put the Bobcats up 10-0.
Wuerth led the offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with three runs scored and a double. Smith had an impressive 2-for-4 performance with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Mebane had a stellar day as well going 2-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Bellflower rounded out the multi-hit guys with a 2-for-5 day including a run scored and an RBI.
John Luke Glanton threw a seven inning gem to get the win on the mound for the Bobcats. He had a shutout performance with two strikeouts.
Will Sims closed the game tossing a single inning and picking up all three outs via the strikeout.
