USC Aiken holds off GCSU 10-9 to salvage series finale

GRANITEVILLE, S.C. | Luke Parker drove in three runs as the University of South Carolina-Aiken held off Georgia College & State University 10-9 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday (March 30) afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The Pacers improved to 9-25 overall and to 5-10 in the Peach Belt, while the Bobcats saw their six-game win streak snapped as they fell to 20-12 and 11-4. GCSU will travel to Valdosta, Georgia, for a 5 p.m. game Tuesday (April 2) against Valdosta State University.

GCSU opened up a 3-0 lead in the top of the third as Braeden Smith and Evan Cowan each drew bases-load walks and Mason Poole followed with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Pacers tied the game at 3 in the third before the Bobcats retook the lead in the fourth with two unearned runs. However, USC Aiken took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 10-5 lead.

GCSU made a game of it in the eighth as they scored four runs to close within a run at 10-9. Mitch Cowan laced a bases-clearing double to right-center field and came around on Brent Burford's RBI single to left.

Jacob Ryan (5-2) took the loss for the Bobcats.

GCSU collected 10 hits in the loss with Gabriel Wuerth getting three of them. Brandon Bellflower and Mitch Cowan each tallied two for the Bobcats.
