Bobcats fall in midweek doubleheader at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.- Georgia College & State University Softball took two tough losses on the road at Newberry College. The first game was 12-1 in five innings and the second contest was 7-6.

The Bobcat fell to 24-26 on the season while Newberry improved to 24-22. GCSU is back in action on Saturday, April 20 at 4 p.m. hosting the University of South Carolina at Beaufort.

Karlie Gutierrez accounted for the lone run of the ball game for Georgia College. Gutierrez launched a round trip shot over the centerfield fence to give GCSU the early lead in the first. Newberry scored 12 runs to take the win in five.

Emily Hobbs and Gutierrez had the only hits of the ball game, both going 1-for-2.

Jana Shellhorse got the start and the loss in the circle for the Bobcats throwing two innings with seven runs scoring only three of which where earned. Tiffany Caban was the first reliver tossing an inning with four runs scoring on two hits with two strikeouts. Kelsey Parlor relieved Caban throwing two thirds' innings with a single run scoring. Kaitlyn Anders closed the game with a strikeout.

The second game was all Bobcats until the seventh inning where the Wolves walked it off. Hobbs kicked the game off with a missile over the centerfield fence to snag the one run lead in the first. GCSU brought two more runs around in the second inning with Samanth Wilison leading off the inning on a five-pitch walk. She was brought around to score on Hobbs' second roundtripper of the game making it 3-0. Come the third inning, Newberry picked up a homer of their own to make it 3-2. The following inning they tied the game at three all on a solo homer. Hobbs reclaimed the lead for the Bobcats in the fifth inning on a double to right field to plate Eliza Khune who reached on an infield single. Divina Checo made it 6-3 on a two run blast over the left field fence. Newberry pushed their fourth run around in the sixth, 6-4. NC then plated three runs in the seventh to take the 7-6 win.

Hobbs led the offense going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored on two home runs and a double. Jessica Owens went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

Shelby Jones got the start and the loss in the circle for GCSU throwing 6.1 innings with seven runs scoring on eight hits. She also fanned five batters. Golden Thrower closed the game throwing a third of an inning.
