MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Softball opened the final conference series with a game one win over the University of South Carolina-Beaufort, 3-2 to celebrate senior day.
GCSU improved to 25-26 overall and 8-14 in the Peach Belt Conference. USCB fell to 20-23 on the season and 4-18 in the PBC. The two teams started played the second game of the series today but was called in the bottom of the third inning with Georgia College up 2-0. The series will be wrapped on Monday, April 22 with game two of the series being played at 1 p.m. and game three to follow.
The Bobcats took the early lead plating a run in the first inning. Senior first baseman
Jessica Owens opened senior day with a triple down the right field line to bring around
Kam Caldwell around. Caldwell was the first runner of the inning as she reached on a single. The Sand Sharks took their only lead of the contest in the fourth inning on a two RBI single. GCSU grabbed the lead back in the fifth inning on a two RBI single up the middle from Caldwell.
Caldwell led the offense on a 2-for-3 day with two RBI and a run scored. Owens was the lone Bobcat with a multi-base hit with her triple down the right field line.
Senior pitcher
Jana Shellhorse snagged her 10
th win of the season throwing seven innings. She only allowed two runs on eight hits.
In between the two contests, the department of athletics recognized the five softball seniors. Shellhorse the McDonough native, Owens the Social Circle native,
Mackenzie Martin the Dacula native,
Golden Thrower the Hanahan S.C. native and
Shea Zweifel the Ormond Beach Fla. Native.
