COLUMBUS, Ga. | Georgia College & State University and Columbus State Unversity split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday (April 20) afternoon at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.
The Cougars took the opener 8-1 before the Bobcats won the nightcap 7-5 with two runs in the top of the ninth inning to claim the three-game series.
The Bobcats improved to 26-18 overall and to 16-8 in the Peach Belt, while the Cougars slipped to 28-19 amd 14-10. GCSU returns to John Kurtz Field Tuesday (April 23) for a 4 p.m. contest against No. 3 North Greenville University.
With game two tied at 5, the Bobcats took advantage of a Cougar miscue to score two unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded
Brent Burford broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to left-center field and
Gabriel Wuerth followed with a RBI ground-rule double to right-center field.
GCSU had opened up a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Mason Poole drove in a run with a ground out and Wuerth added a run-scoring single up the middle.
Braeden Smith closed out the scoring with a double to left-center field.Â
Columbus State battled back to take the lead 4-3 in the fifth inning , but the Bobcats scored twice in the seventh to retake the lead 5-4.
Mitch Cowan had an RBI single to right-center field before Cam McNearne added a sacrifice fly.
Reliever
Lex Kenny (3-2) earned the win as he allowed no earned runs over 3.2 innings while striking out three.
The Bobcats had 11 hits in game two with
Matthew Mebane leading the way with three hits including a double. Wuerth and Cowan added two hits each.
Columbus State took advantage of four GCSU errors in the opener as the Cougars scored eight runs in the middle four innings.
GCSU broke up the Cougar shutout in the ninth on a RBI single back up the middle by Poole.
Bradley Wilson (3-3) absorbed the loss for the Bobcats.
GCSU had seven hits in game one with Cowan accounting for two of them.
