No. 3 Crusaders hold off Bobcats 5-4

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | North Greenville University scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings and made it stand as the No. 3-ranked Crusaders edged Georgia College & State University 5-4 in a non-conference baseball victory Tuesday (April 22) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.

The Crusaders improved to 37-10, while the Bobcats fell to 26-19. GCSU steps back into Peach Belt Conference action Friday (April 26) when they travel to Dahlonega, Georgia, for a 6 p.m. contest against the University of North Georgia.

Georgia College opened up a 2-0 lead after runs in the first two innings. Matthew Mebane drove in the first run in the opening frame on a sacrifice fly to center field.  The Bobcats doubled their lead an inning later on Cam McNearney's 383-foot homer to left-center field. It was his second home run of 2024.

North Greenville scored twice in the fourth to knot the score at 2 on RBI singles from Zach Cowart and Brett Blomquist. The Crusaders added three runs an inning later to open up a 5-2 lead. Blomquist drove in another run on a single through the left side. Bryce Roddey had an RBI single before Cowart drove in the final run on a sacrifice fly.

GCSU  got a run back in the sixth on a throwing error before pulling within a run at 5-4 on Landon Armstrong's off the third base bag into left field.

NGU starter Matthew Murphy (1-0) earned the win while Nate Roof earned his seventh save as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Mason Brown (0-1) took the loss for the Bobcats.

Gabriel Wuerth had two of the six GCSU hits, while Brandon Bellflower and Mitch Cowan each registering a double.
