Midweek doubleheader teeters towards Wolves

MILEDGEVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University softball took two hard fought losses to the University of West Georgia, Wednesday. The first game was 6-4 with game two being a slug fest that ended in an 18-14 final.

The Bobcats fell to 20-20 on the season with the Wolves improving to 16-22. GCSU returns to conference play on Friday at 6 p.m. on the road at Georgia Southwestern State University.

The first end of the doubleheader was a back and forth ending with a big inning from the Wolves. Georgia College pushed the first run around on a Mackenzie Martin single down the right field line to score Divina Checo who led the inning off with a double. UWG countered with a tying run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one. Checo struck her second multi-base hit of game one on a two-run shot over the left center field fence giving GCSU the 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. A wolves double in the sixth made it 3-2. West Georgia took their first lead of the game in the seventh with four runs scoring to make it 6-2. D. Checo scored on an RBI ground out from Reina Checo in the Bobcats' last effort to take game one. UWG won 6-4.

D. Checo was the lone GCSU hitter with multiple hits as she had a perfect 3-for-3 game with three runs scored and two RBI.

Jana Shellhorse got the start and the loss in the circle pitching six inning with four runs scoring on four hits. Shellhorse also nabbed six strikeouts. Golden Thrower closed the game for the Bobcats throwing the seventh inning with two runs, only one of which was earned, scored on two hits.

Game two was offense heavy as 32 runs were scored on 33 hits between the two teams. UWG plated two runs in the top of the first with GCSU countering with two of their own. The first run came on a bases loaded walk to Stephanie Condland. D. Checo pushed the second run around on a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Between the second and third innings West Georgia pushed five around to take the 7-2 lead. Georgia College plated two runs in the third to chip into the lead. Karlie Gutierrez nabbed her first RBI on a single up the middle. She came around to score on a Condland sacrifice fly, 7-4. The Wolves pushed five more around between the fourth and fifth innings for the 12-4 lead. Condland pulled the Bobcats away from the run rule loss on a sacrifice fly to plate the fifth run. Gutierrez got a hold of one and drove a ball to the centerfield fence for a two RBI triple in the sixth. UWG plated their final six runs in the seventh inning for an 18-7 lead. The Bobcats battled back plating seven runs in the bottom of the frame. Emily Hobbs knocked in the first run on an RBI single through the right side. Jessica Owens picked up her first multi-base hit of the day to make it 18-9. Condland stroked a long single to the fence to add two more RBI to her already impressive box score. Martin drove a single to centerfield for two more GCSU runs. Maddie Todd pushed her around on a double to right field for the final run of the game. West Georgia won 18-14.

Several Bobcats had multiple hits in game two. Hobbs went 3-for-5 with a double while scoring three runs and knocking in one. Gutierrez had a stellar 4-for-5 game two with a triple, three RBI and a run scored. Owens went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Todd came in and nabbed a 2-for-3 performance with a pair of doubles driving a run in and coming around to score. Condland led the team in RBI with a superb five on a pair of sacrifice flies and a single.

GCSU pitched by committee in game two. Shelby Jones got the start and the loss throwing two innings with six runs scoring on eight hits and two strikeouts. Kaitlyn Anders took over in the third throwing one inning with one run scoring on three hits. Tiffany Caban pitched one a two third innings leading the team in strikeouts with five. In her outing five runs, four of which were earned, scoring on four hits. Kelsey Parlor pitched two innings with six runs scoring, none of which were earned, on three hits and three strikeouts. Thrower closed the game throwing a third of an inning with no runs scoring.
