Bobcats takes two from Panthers to sweep series

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University posted 48 runs as they swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Claflin University Saturday (April 6) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats took game one 25-0 and followed that up with a 23-4 decision in game two to sweep the PBC series from the Panthers. Both games ended after seven innings.

GCSU improved to 23-13 overall and remained on top of the PBC standings with a 14-4 ledger, while Claflin falls to 1-33 and 0-18. The Bobcats will travel to Albany, Georgia, for a 4 p.m. contest against Albany State University Wednesday (April 10).

Game 1
The Bobcats clubbed 19 hits in the opener as every starter had at least one hit. After Claflin set down the side in order in the bottom of the first, Georgia College scored in every inning, including a nine-run third inning where the Bobcats sent 15 batters to the plate.

Starter Bradley Wilson (3-2) earned the win with five shutout innings, allowing no hits and striking out four.

Brandon Bellflower hit a two-run homer - his seventh of the season - to right-center field to highlight a six-run second frame.

Gabriel Wuerth, Matthew Mebane and Cam McNearney led the potent attack for the Bobcats with three hits apiece, while TJ Kloiber had two. Wuerth, Mebane, McNearney and Kloiber each stroked a double.

McNearney led the way as he drove in four runs, while Wuerth, Bellflower, Mebane and Kloiber each accounting for three RBI. Keagan Baxter drove in two runs.

Game 2
The Bobcats continued their offensive attack with 21 more hits in the nightcap. Eight of the nine starters collected at least a hit.

GCSU broke the game open with back-to-back seven-run outbursts in the first and second innings.

Reliever Jacob Ryan (6-3) earned the win as he struck out a career-high 10 and allowed just three hits in five innings.

Wuerth went 5-for-6, scored four runs and knocked in two runs to led the GCSU offense. Mebane tallied three hits, while Bellflower, Braeden Smith, McNearney and Landon Armstrong accounted for two apiece. Bellflower, Mebane, Smith, and Armstrong each registered a double for the Bobcats.

Mebane and Smith each drove in three runs. while Bellflower, McNearney, Aiden Payne, Mitch Cowan, Mason Poole, and Hank Noonan had two RBI apiece.
