GCSU, SVSU split doubleheader

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia Colleg & State University and Saginaw Valley State University split a softball doubleheader Friday (Feb. 21) afternoon at the Bobcat Softball Field.

A pitching showdown in game one led to a 2-1 win for the Bobcats, while Saginaw Valley State rallied to win the nightcap 7-6 in eight innings.

GCSU improved to 6-6, while the Cardinals fell to 1-1. The Bobcats travel to Due West, South Carolina, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Erskine College Wednesday (Feb. 26).

Stephanie Condland homered  to left center in the bottom of the second to open the scoring giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. That would be the only run the Bobcats got until Condland had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth that would eventually lead to victory. This was Condland's second home run in three games.

The star of the game was Bobcats pitcher Shelby Jones (2-3) as she went on to throw a complete game giving up just one run on five hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. Jones was practically unhitable, as the Cardinals could not string anything together until Emma Helvie had an RBI triple in the top half of the sixth inning.

Even though the Bobcats only had three hits, that was all they needed thanks to Jones's majestic performance on the mound.

Caroline Pollock would open the scoring in game two for the Bobcats with an RBI single. That was followed by who other than Condland who had an RBI single as well. The Cardinals evened things up at 2  in the top of the third with a two-run home run by Olivia Elliot.

Things stayed stagnant until the bottom of the sixth inning where the Bobcats had a four-run inning. Emily Hutcheson, Divina Checo and Kam Caldwell all recorded RBI giving the Bobcats a 6-2 lead.

The Cardinals would strike back by having their own four-run inning tying the game at 6 in the top of the seventh.

The Cardinals would go on to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eight, and that would be all she wrote.

Delaney Conley (1-0) would go on to get the win as Annalise Knop (0-2) would get the loss for the Bobcats.

Caldwell, Checo and Condland all had two hits in the game.
