Late-inning rallies lead Erskine to sweep of GCSU

DUE WEST, S.C. | Late-inning rallies propelled Erskine College to a sweep of a non-conference softball doubleheader over Georgia College & State University Wednesday (Feb. 26) afternoon at the Erskine College Softball Complex.

The Flying Fleet overcame a 7-2 deficit in to win game one 8-7 in eight innings, while they rallied for an 8-6 win in game two after trailing 6-0 at one point.

Erskine improved to 2-12, while the Bobcats fell to 6-8. GCSU returns to the Bobcat Softball Field this weekend to open its Peach Belt Conference schedule with a three-game set against Columbus State University. First pitch for game one between the Cougars and the Bobcats is set for 6 p.m. Friday (Feb. 28).

The Bobcats scored three runs in the first inning of the opener, highlighted by a two-run homer by Karlie Gutierrez. It was her second long ball of 2025.

Erskine closed to 4-2 after a pair of solo homer in the first and fourth innings. GCSU tacked on three runs in its half of the fifth inning to open up a 7-2 lead. Emily Hutcheson stroked a two-run double to right-center field before Sydney Lancaster added an RBI single.

The Flying Fleet tied the game at 7 after they scored five times in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a grand slam from Gabby Burroughs.

It would stay that way until the eighth when Kinsley Kay drove in the winning run with a single to right field off reliever Elora Wilmot (1-1).

Gutierrez led the Bobcats with three hits, while Stephanie Condland and Lancaster had two each.

The Bobcats exploded for five runs in the first inning of the nightcap.  Gutierrez started the scoring with a two-run double to left-center field.  Condland added a sacrifice fly before GCSU took advantage of an Erskine error for two more runs.

Condland stroked an RBI double to right-center field in the fourth to extend GCSU's lead to 6-0.

Esrkine then put together an eight-run fifth inning to reclaim the lead at 8-5. Amber Clark and Ellie Rapson each drove in two runs, while Kennedy Crouch connected on a three-run homer off Wilmot (1-2).

Kam Caldwell and Divina Checo led the Bobcat offense with two hits apiece.
