GCSU sweeps weekend series with Eckerd

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The Georgia College & State University baseball team completed a weekend series sweep over Eckerd College with two victories Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats won the opener against the Tritons by a score of 12-4 before taking game two 11-4.

The 13th-ranked Bobcats improved to 3-4, while Eckerd fell to 2-4. GCSU entertains another Sunshine State Conference opponent next weekend as they welcome Lynn University to John Kurtz Field for a three-game set. First pitch for the opener is 5 p.m. Friday (Feb. 14).

Game one of the doubleheader stayed close throughout the first few innings, as both teams would be knotted at two. Eckerd knocked in its runs via a single by Luis Garrido and a fielding error, while Braeden Smith and Carson Phillips would answer back in the third inning. A Mitch Cowan RBI single gave the Bobcats their first lead.

An RBI double by Tritons' Dawson Jones brought Eckerd within one, but offensive explosions in the seventh, in which GCSU sent up the entire lineup, and the eighth innings would bring eight runs total. Smith's two-run home run in the eighth would be the big highlight.

Bradley Wilson (1-1) collected the win for GCSU, giving up two runs in the effort and punching out five. Brian Lowry earned his first save as he allowed just one over 3.1 innings.

Matthew Mebane led the Bobcats in game two with four his, including a double and a home run.

Game two of the doubleheader was almost over before it began. While the Tritons could plate a couple of runners via a Reid Lisle two-RBI single, the Bobcats answered quickly in the bottom of the inning, chasing out starting pitcher Lane Funneman (0-1) of the game without collecting an out and capitalizing off of a pair of errors to drive home five runs.

Mebane's towering blast in the seventh allowed GCSU to plate five more runs in the inning.

Christian Donaldson (1-2) picked up his first win through three shutout innings of relief, striking out a pair.

Every Bobcat that started in either game left the field on Saturday with at least one base knock. Smith would score the most RBI in either game with three; however, Mebane, Phillips, Hank Noonan, Caleb Miele, and Evan Cowan would have two RBI in one of the two doubleheader games.
