Hurricanes take series opener with Bobcats

AMERICUS, Ga. | Georgia Southwestern State University used a six-run fourth inning en route to a 10-5 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over Georgia College & State University Friday (March 14) evening at Hurricane Stadium.

The Hurricanes improved to 17-8 overall and to 5-2 in the conference, while the Bobcats suffered their first league loss as they fell to 12-13 and 6-1. The middle game of the weekend series will be 2 p.m. Saturday (March 15).

Georgia Southwestern scored a run in the second inning before breaking the game open with six runs in the fourth, which was highlighted by Jarrett Jenkins' grand slam, to open up a 7-0 lead.

The Hurricanes added a run in the fifth before GCSU scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single to right field by Matthew Mebane.

The Bobcats added four runs in the ninth inning. Evan Cowan laced a run scoring double to center,  before Mitch Cowan added an RBI single to left field. After a wild pitch scored a run, Gabe Wuerth added a sacrifice fly to left.

GCSU starter John Luke Glanton (4-2) absorbed the loss, while Andrew Geiger (4-2) earned the win.

Mebane led the Bobcats with three hits, while Braeden Smith collected two, including a sixth-inning double.
