AMERICUS, Ga. | Georgia College & State University collected 14 hits as they recorded a 12-2 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over Georgia Southwestern State University Saturday (March 15) afternoon at Hurricane Stadium.
The Bobcats improved to 13-13 overall and to 7-1 in the conference to even the three-game series with the Hurricanes, who fell to 17-9 and 5-3. The rubber game of the series is set for 2 p.m. Sunday (March 16). The finale was pushed back an hour due to the rains expected overnight.
GCSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a run in the first inning and added four more in the second.
Matthew Mebane had a sacrifice fly in the first.
Carson Phillips started the scoring in the second with an RBI single before
Ben Hamacher drove in a run with the bases loaded.
Braeden Smith added a sacrifice fly before the Bobcats scored their final run on a balk.
Georgia Southwestern pushed across single runs in the third and fifth innings before the Bobcats broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning. Mebane started the scoring with a single before
Mitch Cowan drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Phillips and Hamacher had RBI singles, while
Rand Bestermann drove in two with a single down the left field line.Â
Bestermann connected on a solo home run - his first of 2025 - to left field in the ninth.
Bradley Wilson (4-1() earned the win allowing just one earned run over eight innings, while striking out four.
GCSU amassed 14 hits with Hamacher, Smith and Phillips tallying three apiece. Bestermann, who had two hits, led the Bobcats with 3 RBI, while Hamacher, Mebane and Phillips each drove in two runs.
