Bobcats defeat Hurricanes 5-1 to win weekend series

AMERICUS, Ga. | Georgia College & State University collected 11 hits as they defeated Georgia Southwestern State University 5-1 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday (March 16) afternoon at Hurricane Stadium.

GCSU, which took two of three games from Georgia Southwestern, improved to 14-13 overall and remained in first place in the Peach Belt at 8-1, while the Hurricanes fell to 17-10 and 5-4. The Bobcats host Emmanuel (Ga.) University Tuesday (March 18) at 5 p.m. at John Kurtz Field.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead after a hit by pitch with the bases loaded before the Bobcats scored twice in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Matthew Mebane and Evan Cowan drove in runs on ground outs.

The Bobcats added a run in the sixth on an Evan Cowan RBI single to right-center field before Braeden Smith drove in a run in the eighth on double down the left field line to take a 4-1 lead. GCSU added an insurance run in the ninth on a RBI single up the middle from Mitch Cowan.

Mason Brown (4-0) earned the win, allowing two hits, six walks and one run over six innings, while striking out four. Will Sims earned his third save with three scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out one.

The Bobcats had 11 hits with Smith leading the way with three. Ben Hamacher and Evan Cowan collected two apiece.
