GCSU, North Greenville split doubleheader

TIGERVILLE, S.C. | Georgia College & State University and North Greenville University split a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday (March 25) afternoon at Jan McDonald Field.

North Greenville rallied for 6-5 win in the opener, while GCSU scored early and often as they captured the nightcap 9-1 in five innings.

With the split, the Bobcats improved to 16-14, while the Trailblazers improved to 21-13. GCSU steps back into Peach Belt Conference play Friday (March 28) when they travel to Augusta, Georgia, for a 5 p.m. game at Augusta University..

The Bobcats scored three runs apiece in the first, second and fourth innings in the nightcap.

GCSU opened up a 3-0 lead in the first. Karlie Gutierrez had a bases-loaded walk, before Eliza Kuhne added an RBI single up the middle. Kacie Wiggins added a sacrifice fly to close out the inning.

The Bobcats added three more runs an inning later on a Emily Hutcheson ground out and a two-run homer to left field by Gutierrez. It was her third long ball of 2025.

Gutierrez had a two-run single up the middle to jump start the fourth inning and Kuhne had a run-scoring infield single.

Hutcheson had three hits for the Bobcats, while Kam Caldwell, Gutierrez, who accounted for five RBI, and Kuhne each tallied two hits. 

Annalise Knop (2-2) earned the complete-game win as she allowed just four hits and struck out three.

GCSU took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the fifth inning of the opener. Kuhne singled up the middle for the first run, while Lauren Rule added a two-run single to left.

The Trailblazers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead at 6-5. Reliever Owyen Lyall (1-2) wiggled out of a jam in the seventh to earn the win. GCSU got two runners on base, but Lyall recorded the final two outs on ground outs.

Reliver Tiffany Caban (7-3) absorbed the loss.

Kuhne and Sydney Lancaster had two hits apiece for GCSU, while Kuhne and Rule each drove in two runs.
