MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University opened its season with two non-conference volleyball wins on the opening day of the Bobcat Classic Friday (Sept. 5) inside the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats took the season opener over Emory & Henry University in a four-set victory (25-23, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-12).They completed the evening of day one of the Bobcat Classic with a come-from-behind win over Young Harris College in five sets. The Mountain Lions took the opening two sets 25-21 and 25-14 before GCSU came storming back with wins of 25-15, 25-20 an 16-14 to claim the decision.
The Bobcats sit at 2-0 to begin their season, while Emory & Henry sits at 1-1 and Young Harris fell to 0-2. GCSU closes out action at the Bobcat Classic with two more matches Saturday (Sept. 6). The Bobcats face Rollins College at 2 p.m. and closes out the tournament with a 7 p.m. match against Albany State University.
GCSU split the first two sets against the Wasps in the opener, but followed up by winning the next two, 25-19 and 25-12. However, things went differently against the Young Harris Mountain Lions as GCSU dropped the first two sets 25-21 and 25-14, but regrouped to win the following two sets 25-15 and 25-20. It came down to the wire in the final set, as GCSU fell behind 13-10, but a four-point run put the Bobcats in prime position to take the contest, which they did two points later on a Nya Warren service ace to secure the 16-14 win.
Kaylee Weeks led the Bobcats with 12 kills against Emory & Henry, while Camryn Carlton (11) and Avery Huyck (10) reached double figures. Alanis Bernis paced GCSU with 24 digs and Weeks added a dozen more.Sadie Parkerson tallied 17 assists, while Riese Johnson tallied 11. Hayley Shepherd led the team with three solo blocks.
Lexi Polychrones posted 14 kills, while Huyck (12) and Carlton (11) tallied double figures against Young Harris. Bernis amassed 26 digs, while Johnson contributed 16 more. Parkerson distributed 29 assists, while Johnson had 13.
