MORROW, Ga. | Georgia College & State University fell to Clayton State University 61-32 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Friday (Jan. 23) evening at the Loch and Mason Barfield Court.
The Lakers improved to 8-10 overall and 5-6 in PBC play, while the Bobcats dropped to 7-12 overall and 3-8 in conference play. GCSU returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 28) evening when it travels to Cochran, Ga. to play Middle Georgia State at 5:30 p.m.
Clayton State got off to a quick start, taking a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the opening quarter. The Bobcats fought back and went on their own run sparked by five quick points from junior
Nylah Nuri and a layup each from freshmen
Elizabeth Wynn and
Caroline Beavin. The game was tied at nine to end the quarter.
The Lakers regained control in the second quarter, scoring 19 points while the Bobcats only put up seven. CSU led 16-28 at the break.
The third period was a battle between the teams, as the Bobcats scored 11 and Clayton scored 12. A three pointer from Sloave Vick and five back-to-back points from Beavin brought GCSU within five points but the Lakers maintained control and extended their lead again.
The Bobcats struggled to score in the final period, being outscored 20-5. Turnovers and rebounds were the biggest factors in their collapse, as these mistakes fueled the Lakers late push.
