AMERICUS, Ga. | Georgia Southwestern State University held off Georgia College & State University 79-65 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball matchup Saturday (Jan. 3) night at the Storm Dome.
The Hurricanes improved to 4-1 in conference play and 9-4 overall, while the Bobcats dropped to 3-2 in conference and 10-3 on the season. GCSU returns to the court Wednesday (Jan. 7) evening when it travels to the University of North Georgia for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against the Nighthawks.
GSW jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and carried the momentum through much of the first half. As both teams traded baskets, the Bobcats were able to keep the deficit to 11 points or less. A dunk by
James Nichols III put GCSU within two with three minutes remaining before halftime, but the Hurricanes answered and took a 40-32 into the break.
The Hurricanes stayed in control during the second half, though the Bobcats hung within 10 points for the first 10 minutes. GSW eventually pulled away and maintained a double-digit lead down the stretch to secure the win.
Khalil Green led the Bobcats with 14 points, followed by Nichols with 13 and
Julian Walker with 11.
Tony Carpio grabbed six rebounds and
Oscar Lynch added five.
