Golden Rams down Bobcats 9-4

ALBANY, Ga. | Luke Boone, Evan Cowan and Ty Petrovich each had two hits for Georgia College & State University, but it wasn't enough as Albany State University claimed a 9-4 non-conference baseball victory Tuesday (Feb. 3) at the West Campus Field.

The Golden Rams improved to 1-0, while the Bobcats remained winless in three tries. GCSU travels to Daytona Beach, Florida, for three games this weekend against Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University. The series begins with a 6 p.m. single game Friday (Feb. 6) at Silwa Stadium.

Albany State used a three-run second inning and two more on Tyler Turner homer an inning later to open up a 5-0 lead.

GCSU got two runs - both unearned - in the fifth. Petrovich, who started the inning with a single to left-center field, scored on an error, while Rand Bestermann, who reached on a walk, scored on a passed ball.

The Golden Rams got a run back in the seventh to open a 6-2 lead before Boone connected on a two-run homer - the first by a Bobcat this season - in the eighth inning to pull the Bobcats within two runs at 6-4. Cowan, who reached on a single and stole second, scored on the long ball.

Albany State scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.

Quidon Wright (1-0) earned the win for the Golden Rams, while Nick Bennett (0-1) absorbed the loss for GCSU.
