DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | Carson Phillips and
Luke Boone struck for RBI doubles in the fifth as Georgia College & State University rolled past Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University 4-2 in a non-conference baseball contest Friday (Feb. 6) night at Silwa Stadium.
The Bobcats claim their first win of the early season, improving to 1-3. GCSU head coach Jeff Pelkey collects his first collegiate head coach victory in the process, while the Eagles remained winless at 0-4. GCSU looks to take the series against the Eagles with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 7).
Both starters cruised through the first few innings, with the Bobcats' Keaton Prior turning in 3.2 quality innings, striking out five. The Bobcats struck first in the fifth, however, as Cole Huddleston singled up the middle and Evan Cowan followed it up with a base-knock of his own. Phillips doubled in the two, and Boone traded places with Phillips at second to put the Bobcats up 3-0.
The Eagles played small ball for a run in the bottom of the inning, plating Francisco Feliciano on a fielder's choice from Aiken Santana, and tacked on an unearned run by a miscue by Huddleston.
Boone came around to score in the top of the eighth, as Carson Vick singled up the middle to plate an insurance run for GCSU.
Caden Tillman (1-0) picked up the win on two innings of work, giving up two runs—one unearned—and picking up a strikeout along the way. Aiden Marsiglio (0-2) gave up three of the Bobcats four runs in his 6.2 innings on the mound.
Phillips, Boone, and Vick each had multi-hit performances, while Phillips, Boone, and Ty Petrovich's doubles were the lone extra-base hits for the team.
