MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University fell to Augusta University 62-54 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball matchup Saturday (Feb. 7) afternoon at the Centennial Center.
The Jaguars improved to 15-7 overall and 10-5 in conference play, while the Bobcats fell to 7-15 overall and 3-11 in the Peach Belt. GCSU returns to the Centennial Center Wednesday (Feb. 11) evening to host the University of South Carolina-Aiken at 5:30 p.m.
The Bobcats opened the game a bit slow, going scoreless for the first five minutes before junior
Natalia Bolden knocked down a jumper. From there, the two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the opening period, with Augusta holding a narrow 14-12 advantage at the end of the quarter.
GCSU found its rhythm in the second quarter, using balanced scoring and their defense to take control. They outscored the Jaguars 17-8 to build a seven point lead heading into halftime.
Augusta was able to fight back, reclaiming the lead early behind a jumper from Elyse Autrey. The Bobcats answered back with a three pointer from
Nylah Nuri, as they extended their advantage late in the quarter and carried a three point lead into the final period.
The pace shifted in the fourth quarter as the Jaguars gained momentum on both sides of the floor. Augusta outscored the Bobcats 25-14 in the final period to pull away and secure the 62-54 conference win.
Bolden led GCSU in scoring with 13 points.
Deshona Gaither followed with 12, and Nuri added eight.
