MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University swept Newberry College in a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday (March 10) evening at the Bobcat Softball Field.
GCSU took the opening game 3-0 before taking a 7-3 victory in the second game.
With the sweep, the Bobcats improved to 6-9, while the Wolves fell to 9-11. GCSU returns to Peach Belt Conference play Friday (March 13) evening when they travel to Columbus, Georgia, to play Columbus State University at 6 p.m.
Newberry took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Bobcats tied it up in the second behind a single from
Sydney Lancaster to get
Reina Checo home.
GCSU scored six runs in the third inning to take the lead and widen the gap.
Maddie Todd and
Karlie Gutierrez both scored during the rally, while Lancaster picked up her second RBI with a single to center.
Annalise Knop added a sacrifice fly before
Addison Black delivered a two-run single to center field that got Hobbs and Hutcheson home.
Tiffany Caban came in to pitch the last 2.1 innings, shutting down Newberry's offense to secure the win.
In game one,
Sydney Garrett pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up only two hits while striking out six.
The Bobcats' offense was led by
Kimber Kent, who went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored a run. Kent singled and scored on a fly ball by Checo in the third inning, followed by an RBI double from Lancaster, getting Gutierrez home to put GCSU up 2-0.
Checo put the finishing touches on the win in the fifth inning with a solo home run.
