MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Jacob Smith had three hits and drove in two runs as Columbus State University recorded a 5-1 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over Georgia College & State University Friday (March 13) evening at John Kurtz Field.
The Cougars improved to 12-8 overall and to 7-3 in the Peach Belt, while the Bobcats fell to 9-14 and 6-7. The teams meet at 2 p.m. Saturday (March 14) in the middle game of the three-game series.
Smith gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the second on his single to right. The Bobcats got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on
Evan Cowan's infield single.
Smith added an insurance run in the sixth for the Cougars. Columbus State added two more runs in the seventh.
GCSU only managed three hits against Columbus State. In addition to Cowan,
Luke Boone and
Cole Huddleston recorded the other singles for the Bobcats.
Cougar starter Sawyer Wilson (4-1), who struck out five in the complete-game effort, scattered the three hits with two walks and three hit batters.
Keaton Prior (1-5) struck out seven in 6.2 innings for the Bobcats.
