AUGUSTA, Ga. | Georgia College & State University baseball players
Luke Boone and
Keaton Prior have been recognized by the Peach Belt Conference.
Boone was named the league's Player of the Week ending March 2, while Prior was lauded as the Pitcher of the Week. The due help record a three-game series sweep of the University of South Carolina-Beaufort over the weekend at John Kurtz Field.
Boone, a junior outfielder from Richmond Hill, Georgia, batted .500 (6-of-12) for the week with a 1.167 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. He drove in 13 runs in the sweep with two doubles and two home runs. Boone drove in six runs in the series opener. He hit a solo home run to start a 10-run fourth inning and then came up later in the frame and swatted a grand slam to left. Boone also drove in four runs in game two and three more in the series finale against the Sand Sharks.
Prior, a right-handed pitcher from Milledgeville, Georgia, tossed a no-hitter as the Bobcats took the series opener against USC Beaufort 11-0 in seven innings. It was the first no-no for the Bobcats since Michael Joyce twirled his in a 7-0 (7 innings) win against Kennesaw State University on Feb. 26, 2000.Â
Prior struck out eight and allowed just one runner to get to third base in the complete-game effort. He walked two, hit a batter and had another reach on a throwing error. Prior retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced.
GCSU returns to action Tuesday (March 3) as they travel to Due West, South Carolina, for a 2 p.m. non-conference contest against Erskine College.
