Bobcats open PBC action with 5-2 win over Bearcats

GREENWOOD, S.C. | Georgia College & State University opened up Peach Belt Conference women's tennis action as the Bobcats defeated Lander University 5-2 Friday (March 27) afternoon at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.

The Bobcats improved to 8-6 overall and to 1-0 in the Peach Belt, while the Bearcats fell to 5-4 and 0-1. GCSU makes the quick turnaround as they return to the Centennial Center Tennis Courts Saturday (March 28) at 1 p.m. when they face No. 37 Middle Georgia State University in a PBC contest.

GCSU clinched the doubles point when Laura Almagro and Natalie Kirka outlasted their opposition at No. 2 in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4).

Lander won the first two singles matches to open up a 2-1 lead, but GCSU won the other four matches to claim the victory. Kirka and Lucy Kim each won their matches in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 5 respectively to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. Rachel Black clinched the win for GCSU at No. 1 as she droped the first set 6-2, but rallied to win the next two 6-3, 6-0. Almagro finished the GCSU win with a straight-set victory at No. 4.
