No. 13 Lenoir-Rhyne rallies past GCSU 7-5

HICKORY, N.C. | No. 13 Lenoir-Rhyne University scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 7-5 non-conference baseball victory over Georgia College & State University Monday (March 30) evening at Durham Field.

The Bears improved to 25-6-1, while the Bobcats fell to 13-18. GCSU returns to action Tuesday (March 31) with a 4 p.m. contest against Coker University in Hartsville, South Carolina.

GCSU took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat. Evan Cowan led off with a single and moved to third on Carson Vick's double down the left field line. Cowan later scored on a sacrifice fly from Carson Phillips.

The Bears scored twice in their half of the inning, but the Bobcats pushed across single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to  open up a 4-2 lead.  

Rand Bestermann had a solo home run to left-center field in the second, before he drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the third. Phillips drove in another run in the fourth on a ground out.

Lenoir-Rhyne gort a run back in the fifth before GCSU took a 5-2 lead on Vick's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

The Bears took the lead for good with a four-run sixth inning. Mackenzie Wainwright had a two-run double to tie the game at 5 before Drew Beard added a sacrifice fly.

Cowan accounted for four of the seven GCSU hits.

Bryceton Berry (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Bobcats.
