MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The Georgia College & State University softball team dropped both games of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader 5-1 and 7-1 to the University of North Georgia Saturday (March 7) at the Bobcat Softball Field.
The fourth-ranked Nighthawks improved to 18-4 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Bobcats fell to 4-9 and 1-2. GCSU returns to the Bobcat Softball Field for a non-conference doubleheader against Newberry College on Tuesday (Mar. 10) at 1 p.m.
North Georgia broke a scoreless tie in game one with a four-run fourth inning with some timely hits to eventually take control. The Nighthawks added another run in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead before the Bobcats made their way on the board in the seventh inning.
Karlie Gutierrez and
Annalise Knop both recorded singles, and
Kacie Wiggins followed with an RBI infield hit for the Bobcats' single run.
In game two, North Georgia struck early again, scoring twice in the second innings on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. GCSU answered in the fourth inning with
Sydney Lancaster getting an RBI single to bring Gutierrez home and cut the deficit to one.
The momentum shifted back to the Nighthawks in the fifth with an RBI double then a run-scoring single pushing the lead to 4-1. North Georgia added two more runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to pull away and secure the doubleheader sweep.
