MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern State University to win the series Saturday (April 11) evening at the Bobcat Softball Field.
The Bobcats won the opener 5-3 and the Hurricanes won the nightcap 7-3.
The series win helped GCSU improve to 21-15 overall and 11-7 in the PBC, while the Hurricanes fell to 14-25 and 3-15. The Bobcats return to action Tuesday (April 14) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Ga.
Tiffany Caban (6-4) pitched a complete-game striking out eight batters, while allowing just four hits over seven innings.
The Bobcats got things going in the third when
Emily Hobbs singled home a run and
Reina Checo followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Emily Hutcheson added an RBI double in the fifth and
Maddie Todd's sacrifice fly in the sixth pushed the lead to 5-0.
Georgia Southwestern got on the board in the fifth when Erin Garland singled to left to score two runners and Madison Banks followed with an RBI single to cut it to 4-3, but Caban was able to retire the final five batters through the rest of the contest.
GSW responded with a dominant nightcap as Pyper McCard pitched all seven innings and the Hurricanes scored seven runs on 13 hits.
GCSU took a 1-0 lead in the second when
Emily Hutcheson singled to score
Karlie Gutierrez, then extended it to 3-0 in the fourth with another run by Gutierrez.
But the Bobcats couldn't hold the lead, as Georgia Southwestern sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth and scored five times to take a 5-3 lead.
GCSU was unable to respond, and the Hurricanes added two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
