ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Georgia College & State University defeated Flagler College 13-5 in a Peach Belt Conference softball series opener Thursday (April 2) evening at Flagler Field.
The Bobcats improved to 15-14 overall and 7-6 in the Peach Belt, while the Saints fell to 10-22 overall and 6-7 in conference play. The teams will close out the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday (April 3) afternoon.
Flagler jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a three-run home run by Kiley McQuillan in the first inning, but GCSU responded with 13 unanswered runs to take control of the game.
The Bobcats scored two runs in the second inning to close the scoring deficit off of singles by
Halley Nobles and
Emily Hutcheson that brought
Karlie Gutierrez and
Maddie Todd home.
GCSU tied the game on
Emily Hobbs' solo home run in the third before breaking it open with a five-run fourth inning. Georgia College added a single run in the sixth and four more in the seventh to pull away.
The Bobcats finished with 14 hits, led by
Sydney Lancaster, who went 3 for 5 with two RBI, and Hobbs, who had two hits, three runs scored and two RBI.
Karlie Gutierrez added two hits and two RBI.
Sydney Garrett earned the complete-game win for the Bobcats, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out six.
