Bobcats sweep Saints, take all three in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Georgia College & State University swept Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Friday (April 3) evening at Flagler Field.

The Bobcats won the opener 1-0 and the nightcap 11-7.

With the weekend sweep of the Saints, GCSU improved to 17-14 overall and 9-6 in conference, while Flagler fell to 10-24 and 6-9. The Bobcats return to the Bobcat Softball Field Tuesday (April 7) afternoon to host Clark Atlanta University for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

Tiffany Caban set the tone in the opener, throwing a complete-game shutout. Caban allowed three hits, walked three and struck out five to improve to 4-5. GCSU's only run came in the fourth inning, when Reina Checo grounded out to score Sydney Lancaster, who singled at the plate.

In the nightcap, Georgia College erupted for six runs in the first inning — forcing Flagler to change pitchers after the first five runs — and led 10-1 through three innings. A three-run homerun by Flagler's Ryleigh Hall in the fifth cut into the deficit and pulled the Saints within five.

Emily Hutcheson scored the last run for the Bobcats in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to right field by Sydney Lancaster with bases loaded.

Karlie Gutierrez went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Addison Black added three hits and two RBI.

Annalise Knop earned the win to improve to 4-0 for the Bobcats, and Sydney Garrett recorded her 15th save.
