GCSU, Middle Georgia split Peach Belt doubleheader

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University split its last Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader with Middle Georgia State University Friday (May 1) at the Bobcat Softball Field.

The Bobcats took a 6-3 win in game one before falling 2-1 in game two.

GCSU moved to 27-19 overall and 15-11 in the Peach Belt, while the Knights moved to 17-27 and 9-17. The teams will close out the series Sunday (May 3) with a single game at 2 p.m. GCSU will honor its seniors Stephanie Condland and Maddie Todd after the game.

Georgia College responded to an early Middle Georgia lead in game one with a three-run third inning, getting RBI singles from Emily Hobbs and Karlie Gutierrez and a ground out by Sydney Lancaster that scored Reina Checo for the third run of the inning. Then a big RBI triple from Gutierrez and another RBI single from Lancaster in the fifth gave the Bobcats the 6-3 lead.

Gutierrez finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and added two runs, while Lancaster went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Sydney Garrett (11-10) earned the complete-game win, allowing three runs on eight hits.

Middle Georgia bounced back in game two behind a strong outing from pitcher Riley Haley, who held the Bobcats to one run on seven hits. GCSU scored in the first on an RBI single from Lancaster, but the offense struggled from there.

Addison Black went 2-for-3 in the matchup.

Tiffany Caban (8-5) took the loss despite a strong outing in the circle, holding the Knights to just three hits over seven innings and allowing two runs.
