MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University got two goals from
Mackenzly Cheely and another clean sheet from
Kassidy Fortin as the Bobcats shut out Flagler College 3-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday (Sept. 19) afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Field.
The Bobcats improved 4-2-0 overall and to 2-0-0 in the PBC with their third consecutive win over the season, while the Saints fell to 2-4-1 and 2-1-0. It was the first win over Flagler since GCSU turned the trick - a 1-0 road victory - on Halloween in 2015. Flagler, which is leaving the PBC for the Sunshine State Conference next year, had gone 10-0-2 against the Bobcats since 2015. GCSU steps outside of league play Wednesday (Sept. 23) when they travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee, for a 5 p.m. match against Carson-Newman University.
The Bobcats struck first in the eighth minute when
Alayna Cobb served the ball into Cheely, who deposited the ball into the left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. GCSU doubled its lead to 2-0 19 minutes later when Cheely struck again off a
Lauren Dozier cross. It wss Cheely's second match this season where she scored twice and marked her team-leading fifth goal of the campaign.
The Bobcats earned an insurance goal at the 69:50 mark when
Brittany Bakke slotted her second goal of the season into the back of the net after
Kat Wilber passed her the ball from the right side.
The teams each accumulated 10 shots, but the Bobcats held an 8-6 advantage on shots on goal. Fortin recorded her second consecutive shutout as she collected six saves. Flagler accounted for all four corner kicks in the match.
