MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Sophomore guard Mandi Dudish
(Snellville, Ga.) scorched the Centennial Center nets for
21 points, 18 of which in the first half, as Georgia College &
State University women's basketball (5-3) extended its win streak
to three games with a 75-65 victory over Valdosta State University
(9-4).
Dudish hit seven threes, tying the school record for single-game
bombs done most recently by Latia Love (2003-05)
Jan. 17, 2004 against UNC Pembroke. The 5-foot-9 sophomore also set
a career mark in blocks with four. The 12 team treys came one short
of the school mark, shooting 71 percent (12-17) from behind the
arc.
Senior Tiauna Brantley
(Woodstock, Ga.) struggled out of the gates with just four
first half points, but finished with an 11-point, seven-rebound
effort. She remains the lone Bobcat to score in double figures each
game this season, and eclipsed the 600 career point mark in the
second half.
Sophomore sharpshooter Dominique Huffin
(Tucker, Ga.) came off the pine for two bombs to finish
with 13 points. Junior point guard Shandrea Moore (Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla.) had nine assists with classmate
Antoinette Reames
(Orlando, Fla.) adding 11 points.
The second stanza would be unkind to GCSU, as a once 16-point
lead was cut to two with 8:39 remaining on a Tamika Booker layup.
The Bobcats nearly doubled VSU's scoring for the rest of the
contest, thanks in large part to three-point plays on three
consecutive possessions. Old-fashioned three-point plays by
Brantley and Reames bookended a long-range shot from Huffin
starting at the 3:43 mark.
In a defensive-minded contest the Bobcats held VSU to just 33
percent shooting, allowing nine field goals in the first half and
21 total. The Blazers stayed in the game with 16 offensive rebounds
to GCSU's four. The Bobcats shot 55 percent (26-47). The win trims
VSU's lead in the all-time series to 14-11.
Booker had a 15-point, 15-rebound double-double for VSU, with
guard Leschelle Matthews adding 15 of her own including 7-of-7 from
the charity stripe. Guard Sczeny Hartry added 12 points.
The Bobcats return to action Monday, Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
traveling to Clayton State University (8-1, 2-0 PBC) in the return
to Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play. The Lakers most recently beat
Augusta State University 80-69 tonight.
