MORROW, Ga. - The Georgia College & State University soccer team (6-5-3, 2-1-2 PBC) beat Peach Belt Conference (PBC) opponent Clayton State University (3-7-1, 2-3-1 PBC) 3-0 today (Oct. 11), collecting the sixth shutout of the season for the Bobcats.

The first goal of the contest came well into the first period when senior Lyric Burnett (Douglasville, Ga.) sent a cross pass from the right side. Burnett's ball was deflected off of classmate Kara Teresi's (Tampa, Fla.) shin and sent to Jamie Nevin (Grovetown, Ga.), who was alone on the left side. Nevin netted the ball in the vacant net during the 22^nd minute.

The Lakers were able to hold off the Bobcats the rest of the half, but their luck came to an end when an Ally Treat (Fayetteville, Ga.) pass found Burnett on a breakaway down the right wing in the 56^th minute. The goal was Burnett's second this season and Treat's third assist this year.

Georgia College put the nail in the coffin during the 86^th minute as Megan McAlpin (Newnan, Ga.) sent a sliding shot toward the diving Clayton keeper. The shot ricocheted hard off the keeper, back to the sophomore's leg and bounced into the net. Much to the Lakers' dismay, the bizarre game of pinball gave the unassisted McAlpin her second goal of the 2009 campaign and put the contest out of reach at 3-0.

In the net for the Bobcats, Mary Rob Plunkett (Augusta, Ga.) grabbed two saves, both of which came in the first period, while Dominique Trappio snagged four saves for Clayton State. The Bobcats out shot the Lakers today 16-7 and won the battle in the corners 6-2.

The Bobcat defense impressed today shutting down the Lakers' leading scorer, Cherie Sayon. The second leading scorer in the Peach Belt, Sayon had 13 goals this season coming into today's contest. The Georgia College defense allowed her just four shots today, all in the first half. The Lakers as a team didn't record a second-half shot. The defensive whitewashing was a team effort, but it was junior back Jessica Binkowski (Cumming, Ga.) who matched up with Sayon the entire contest.

The win gives the Bobcats eight points in the PBC Standings, leapfrogging Clayton (with seven points) into sixth place.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Oct. 17 as they travel to Flagler College for a kickoff time of 2 p.m.
