AMERICUS, Ga.
- The Georgia College & State University
soccer team (5-3-1, 1-0 PBC) extended its win streak to three and
started the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) season with a victory all
in one fell swoop, a 2-0 win tonight (Sept. 23) at Georgia
Southwestern State University (3-4, 0-1 PBC).
The Bobcats dominated the contest defensively, allowing just one
Hurricane shot while taking 23.
After a scoreless first half, both goals came in a flurry.
Senior Daria Owen
(Snellville,
Ga.) netted her second of the
year just over six minutes into the second half. Both of Owen's
goals this season have been game-winners. Owen took a pass from
junior Ally Treat
(Fayetteville,
Ga.) and blasted a 35-foot shot
to break the scoreless tie.
Just 3:22 later, freshman Anna Wierzbicki
(Newnan,
Ga.) netted her first career
goal, off an assist from Newnan High teammate Megan McAlpin
(Newnan,
Ga.). The Bobcats are now 11-0 in
McAlpin's career when she notches a goal or an assist.
Junior Mary Rob Plunkett
(Augusta,
Ga.) made the lone save in the
win, coming with 8:36 left in the first half. For the final 53:36,
the staunch defensive line led by senior Morgan Cobb
(Cataula,
Ga.), sophomore Tawny
Moffat (Peachtree City,
Ga.) and freshman Becky
Knoll (Elk Grove,
Ill.) failed to allow a shot.
Cobb, Moffat and Knoll all recorded over 70 minutes on the
defensive line tonight.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. taking
on the University of Tampa (3-4-1) at a tournament in Savannah, Ga.
