JONESBORO, Ga. – The Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) Tournament came to a close for the No. 30 Georgia
College & State University women's tennis team (11-11)
Friday as the Bobcats lost 5-1 to No. 5 Columbus State University
(18-4) in the first round.
The Bobcats got their lone win from first singles, as senior
Diane Danna (Paris) tried to make the most of
her final PBC Tournament. The No. 48 singles player in the country,
she upended the No. 22 player in Loriane Favoretto in straight sets
6-2 and 6-1.
Columbus State claimed doubles action, going 3-0. In the first
spot, No. 11 ranked Loriane Favoretto and Hanane Toumi defeated the
Bobcat French duo of Danna and Bertille
Lion (Lyon, France) 8-1, while Georgia College
freshmen Kayla
Barksdale (Martinez, Ga.) and Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) suffered the
same fate against No. 22-ranked Tracy Castillo and Caterina Kiefer.
The Bobcat French pair is now 12-10, while the freshmen are 10-11.
At third doubles, CSU's Sofia Persson and Gabriela
Vasilescu blanked Adriana
Acuna (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Linda
Mosa (Stockholm, Sweden) 8-0. The Bobcat team is 7-10
in the No. 3 spot this season.
Danna downed Favoretto at first singles, improving to a 16-4
record, winning 12 of her last 13 matches. Needing only two more
victories, the Cougars then retired Lingner via Persson in two 6-3
sets, while Kiefer overpowered Mosa 6-2 and 6-0 in the No. 5
position. Lingner fell to 6-15 overall this season, while Mosa has
posted a 9-10 record.
The Cougars advanced to the second round of the Peach Belt
Tournament, where they will face Clayton State tomorrow (April 17)
at 1 p.m.
