MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College Women's Tennis (1-0) had the best possible start to its 2017 spring season with a 9-0 win over the visiting Brenau University Tigers (0-1).

Two defaults from the five-woman Brenau roster gave Georgia College the edge at the start. Senior Macy Polk (Powder Springs) paired up with fellow senior Hannah Serdinia (Suwanee) to take down the first Brenau doubles pair of the day. Their 8-5 match win put the Bobcats up 3-0 overall.

Jena Kelly (Lawrenceville) and Emma Niemi (Cumming) had a little more difficult battle on Centennial's court one as they faced Maya Mammetgulyyeva and Kirsten Dickins. The Brenau Tigers forced a tie-breaker, but the Bobcats came out on top, winning the match 9-8.

Five from each team then took the blue and green courts for singles play. First to finish was Niemi, who shut out her Tiger opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Niemi's win gave the Bobcats their first team win of the 2017 season.

Serdinia finished shortly after, adding to the Bobcats' number of match winsnwith a 6-2, 6-3 putout. Georgia College rookie Camilla Negrini (Milan, Italy) got her first win in a Bobcat uniform and routed her Tiger foe, 6-0, 6-0. Kelly finished fourth after a tighter match with Patricia Pacau. Kelly came out on top, though, with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Finally, Polk took the ninth match win for the Bobcats with a long fought war against Mammetgulyyeva. Polk lost the first set in a tie break, 7-6, but answered with a 6-1 domination in the second set. In the tiebreaker, the ladies battled back-and-forth, trading points constantly. Ultimately, Polk's strong backhand topped the Tiger from Turkmenistan, 10-8.

Georgia College's 9-0 win is a vast improvement from last year's 5-4 victory over Brenau, boding well for the rest of the Bobcats' 2017 season.

Saturday, the Georgia College Men's Tennis team takes on its first opponent of the spring season. They host Morehouse College at noon. Next up for the women, Valdosta State University makes it way north to Milledgeville for a tennis doubleheader at the Centennial Center Sunday, Feb. 12. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
