MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – It took wins in the final two singles slots, both in three-set efforts to help the Georgia College Men's Tennis team (3-7, 1-5 PBC) pick up their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) victory of the season, a 4-3 win over Augusta University (5-7, 1-6 PBC) Wednesday at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
The Jaguars got wins in the second and third slots to take the doubles point.
In second doubles, freshman Sebastian Nunez (Buford) and junior Lukas Zavrel (Ulvano, Czech Republic) teamed for a 6-2 loss to Lucas Bolle and Martin Hurtado. The third doubles line featured a 6-4 loss for senior Cole Heller (Woodstock) and sophomore Jack Sorel (Alpharetta) to Herick Isago and Alvaro Quereda.
Augusta took a 2-0 lead with the initial singles finish, coming in the third slot. There, Quentin Cano Perez beat Zavrel 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Jorge Robinson (Entre Rios, Argentina) then got GC on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win in second singles over Bolle. Freshman Enzo Sergi (Nice, France) evened the match at 2-2 with the first of many three-set efforts, as he beat Isago 6-1, 6-7, 6-0. Sergi is now 4-4 this season.
In sixth singles, the Jaguars got a point away from victory as sophomore Ben Grunert (Roswell) had a grueling 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) loss to Mattia Mauriziano. Backs against the wall, the Bobcats got a pair of three-setters to take the team win. First, sophomore Jesus Villamizar Abia (Venezuela) beat Hurtado in the fourth slot 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. Then in first singles, senior Matt Rogel (Sautron, France) dropped the first set to Ricard Rubio 7-5, then rebounded with a 7-5 of his own and closed it out 6-4 in the third. The win was the first in Villamizar Abia's Bobcat career, and Rogel improved to 5-5 on the season in singles play.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, April 16 at 2 p.m., hosting Francis Marion University.
