GREENWOOD, S.C. – Backs against the wall and down 3-1, the Georgia College Women's Tennis team (5-6, 2-3 PBC) rattled off three straight singles wins to beat Lander University (8-7, 3-3 PBC) 4-3 Friday on the road.
The Bearcats took the doubles point with wins in the first and third slots. In first doubles, Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) and Emma Fleming (Suwanee, Georgia) lost to Eduarda Ferreira and Maria Rey 6-4. Third doubles brought a 6-1 loss for Kim Yatribi (Frejus, France) and Emily Pope (Canton, Georgia) to Lindsey Wiggins and Roberta Armani.
Lander doubled its lead with a win in the sixth slot, where Pope was shut out by Wiggins. Richter then got the Bobcats on the board, 6-3, 6-1 in the second slot over Chiara Gerbino. Lander moved to one team point from victory with a win on the fourth line, as Jordan Bowie (Macon, Georgia) lost to Rey by two 6-4 sets, setting up the Bobcat heroics.
In the third slot, Fleming dropped the first set 6-2, then rebounded with 6-2 and 6-3 sets to beat Raquel Acco. Ashton Morrison (Cumming) also fell in the first set in fifth singles, 6-4 to put Lander a set away from victory. The freshman responded by taking the next two 6-4 and 6-2 to bring the match even at 3-3.
The final bout came down to Yatribi against Ferreira, the first time this season Yatribi has played first singles. Lander once again got a single set away from the team win, after Ferreira won the first set 7-6. Undaunted, Yatribi then took the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-4 to get her team the win.
With the singles wins, Yatribi, Richter and Fleming each improve to a team-best 6-5. Morrison is now 5-6 on the year.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, April 12 at 4 p.m., hosting Georgia Southwestern State University.
