AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Georgia College Men's Tennis team (5-4, 0-1 PBC) came up short in their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) matchup of the season, dropping a 5-2 bout at No. 21 Augusta University (9-5, 1-2 PBC) Monday.
The Jaguars got the early lead with the doubles point, picking up a pair of tough wins on the second and third lines. Jorge Robinson (Entre Rios, Argentina) and Karol Malirz (Marbella, Spain) teamed for a 7-5 loss to Ricard Rubio and Lucas Bolle in second doubles. In the third slot, Gabriel Cizek (Dolní Břežany, Czech Republic) and Jesus Villamizar Abia (Valencia, Venezuela) lost by the same score to Alvaro Quereda and Herick Isago.
Momentum continued to singles play, starting with a loss in the third slot. There, Robinson dropped 6-2, 6-1 sets to Isago. The fifth and sixth slots finished at nearly the same time, both going to Augusta to clinch the team victory. In fifth singles, Enzo Sergi (Nice, France) lost to Artur Abyan Davydovskiy 6-3, 6-4. In sixth singles, Aurelien Arlot (Houilles, France) lost to Quentin Cano Perez by a pair of 6-3 sets.
Masumi Komada (Aichi, Japan) then got the Bobcats on the board with a win in the fourth slot, beating Daniel Szczupak 6-4, 6-3. The final two bouts went to three sets. On the second line Cizek fell to Rubio 5-7, 6-2, 10-8. Malirz picked up the second point for the Bobcats with a 6-4, 3-6, 13-11 battle against Bolle in first singles.
With the victories, Komada moves to 6-3 on the season and Malirz is now 5-4. Both have also won two in a row.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m., traveling to Columbus to take on No. 10 Southern Arkansas University.
