AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 62 Georgia College Women's Tennis team (15-6, 4-3 PBC) closed the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) portion of the season with a 4-3 win at No. 22 Augusta University (16-4, 3-4 PBC), clinching the No. 4-seed in the upcoming PBC Tournament.
The Bobcats got the doubles point with wins on the first and third lines. In first doubles, defending PBC Player of the Week Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) and Emma Fleming (Suwanee) beat Teresa Franco and Julia Moraes 6-2. Richter and Fleming improved to 16-5 on the season.
On the third line, Sofia Shing (Auckland, New Zealand) and Chiara Santoro (Santa Ursula, Spain) topped Clara Basunana and Claudia Borbon 6-3. It was the second doubles win for this pair this season.
On the second flight, Jordan Bowie (Macon) and Ashton Morrison (Cumming) fell 6-2 to Edith Rueda and Carlota Costa.
The Jaguars evened the match with the first singles finish, as Morrison lost to Costa 6-0, 6-4. Santoro put GC back in front with a win on the third line, beating Franco 6-4, 6-3. Next came a victory in fourth singles, where Fleming edged Rueda 6-2, 7-6[1].
National No. 38 Richter clinched the team win with a victory in the second slot, a ranked battle with No. 59 Moraes 7-6[5], 6-3. The final two bouts went to the Jaguars, as Shing lost to national No. 17 Borbon in first singles by a pair of 7-5 sets and then Bowie fell to Basunana 7-6[6], 7-5, ending a six-match win streak for the Bobcat.
Santoro now owns an 11-8 mark in singles, while Fleming improved to a team-best 15-4. Richter is just a tick behind at 14-4.
Up next for the Bobcats is the PBC Tournament, beginning Friday, April 29 at Columbus State University.
