COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 4-seed Georgia College Women's Tennis team (15-7) wrapped up the 2022 season Friday, falling 4-1 to No. 5-seed Augusta University (17-4) in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament.
The Jaguars picked up the doubles point by getting wins in the second and third slots. A Bobcat defeat came in second doubles, as senior Jordan Bowie (Macon) and Ashton Morrison (Cumming) teamed for a 6-4 loss to Carlota Costa and Edith Rueda.
First doubles went to the Bobcats, as seniors Emma Fleming (Suwanee) and Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) nabbed a 6-2 win over Teresa Franco and Julia Moraes. The deciding victory came in the third slot, and was a nailbiter. Sofia Shing (Auckland, New Zealand) and Chiara Santoro (Santa Ursula, Spain) fell just short in a 7-6 [7-5] battle to Claudia Borbon and Clara Basunana.
Singles results began in the fourth slot. There, Fleming evened the score in a straight-set win over Rueda in a pair of 6-3 sets. Next, Augusta got a win in a ranked battle at second singles. No. 38 Richter was upset by No. 47 Moraes 6-2, 6-4.
Fifth singles then put the Jaguars a point away, as Morrison came up short against Basunana 6-3, 6-1. Sixth singles closed the day, with Bowie falling to Costa, 6-3, 6-4.
