MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The Georgia College & State University women's soccer team opened up their home schedule Wednesday (Sept. 6) evening at Bobcat Field with a 3-1 non-conference victory over Newberry College.
The Bobcats improved to 2-0-0, while the Wolves slipped to 1-2-0. GCSU continues its homestand Saturday (Sept. 9) with a 3 p.m. match against Valdosta State University.
Newberry took an early 1-0 lead on a Jaidyn Jacobs unassisted goal just 10 minutes into the match.
Sarah Mason leveled the match at 1 as her strike from 25 yards out went through the Wolves goalkeeper's hand at the 17:36 mark.
The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead eight minutes before intermission on
Ava Martin's goal.
Zelia Griffith set up the goal for Martin, who knocked in from 20 yards out and into the upper right corner of the net.
GCSU added an insurance goal with 4:11 remaining in the match as
Amanda Dewey put a shot from the left corner of the box into the top right corner of the net.
The Bobcats outshot the Wolves 24-11, including a 9-3 margin on goal. GCSU outshot Newberry 11-2 in the second half. GCSU also held a 9-6 edge in corner kicks.
Kassidy Fortin earned the win in goal as she stopped two shots.
