Warriors hold off late Bobcat charge in 87-83 win

CENTRAL, S.C. | Makayla Raines and Peyton Looky of Southern Wesleyan University combined for six three-point field goals as the Warriors outscored Georgia College & State University by 17 points in the third quarter en route to an 87-83 victory in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday (Dec. 4) evening inside Tysinger Gymnasium.

The Bobcats, who are ranked fifth regionally, fell to 6-2, while the Warriors improved to 3-6. GCSU begins a three-game homestand with its first Peach Belt Conference game against Columbus State University Saturday (Dec. 7) at 1:30 p.m. at the Centennial Center.

Georgia College and Southern Wesleyan traded leads throughout the first quarter, as the Bobcats had a 22-19 lead after the first 10 minutes. The Bobcats began to pull away in the second as a Hannah Cail three-point field goal gave GCSU its largest lead of the game at nine points (37-28) with 1:45 remaining before halftime.

Raines and Looky each knocked down three three-pointers for the Warriors, who outscored the Bobcats 31-14 in the period, in the third quarter as Southern Wesleyan shot 8-of-10 (.800) from long distance. A Looky three-pointer with 5:38 to play in the third gave the Warriors the lead for good at 45-43. The Warriors expanded their lead to 13 points (63-49) with 39 seconds remaining as the Bobcats was limited to 21 percent shooting (4-of-19) in the quarter.

The Bobcats used a 12-5 run over the middle stages of the fourth quarter to pull within two points (74-72) after an old-fashioned three-point play from Miracle Parker with 2:14 to go, but that would be as close as they would get.

Ashyia Willis led Georgia College with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Evie DePetro added 16 points, three rebounds and two blocks. Jada Warren notched a double double with 15 rebounds and 10 points. Cail tallied nine points, while Parker and Natalia Bolden added eight points apiece. Parker also tossed in six rebounds.
