MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Hannah Cail dropped in a career-high 25 points as Georgia College & State University took down Lander University 69-61 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon inside the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats won their second straight game and improved to 10-6 overall and to 3-3 in conference play, while the Bearcats fell to 8-5 and 3-3. GCSU looks to extend its winning streak when they host Clayton State University Wednesday (Jan. 22) at 5:30 p.m.
Scoring between both teams was fast and furious to open the game, with the Bobcats jumping out to a 10-5 lead, with Cail providing seven of those points. However, an Evie DePetro three-pointer with 1:20 remaining on the clock kept things at a one-point Bobcat lead (18-17).
The second quarter would be even more action-packed, with each team either trading leads or tying everything up 12 times. Ashyia Willis would provide the Bobcats with two layups in the last minute of play, but a three-pointer by the Bearcats' Aliyah Bello with 17 ticks left in the half would send the game to halftime all-even at 38.
Everything stayed close to open the second half, although, midway through the quarter, a 6-0 Bobcat run capped off by a Jada Warren free throw gave Georgia College a 52-46 lead with 2:08 remaining.
The Bobcats would continue to pad their lead throughout the remainder of the contest. A DePetro three-pointer with 4:36 remaining gave GCSU its largest lead at nine points (65-56). The closest the Bearcats would get rest of the way was four points (65-61).
Cail's 25 points led the Bobcats, while Willis and DePetro scored 14 and nine, respectively. Warren again led GCSU in rebounds with 15, with Willis collecting seven rebounds and four assists. Both Cail and DePetro went 3-of-6 from the three-point line.
